Dixon Qualifies Eighth at Columbus
HEBRON, Ohio. (June 12, 2004) -- Two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon will start from the No. 8 position as he aims to win at National Trail Raceway for the fourth consecutive year on Sunday afternoon.
Dixon used a tune-up from five-time champion crew chief Dick LaHaie to power his Don Prudhomme-owned dragster to identical 4.550 elapsed times on both of Saturday's qualifying attempts. The 33-time NHRA winner raced to a performance 4.550 seconds 322.58 mph on Saturday's first qualifying effort, before powering his Miller-backed rail to a pass of 4.550 at 326.48, good enough for the eighth qualifying spot and lane choice in the first round.
"It's nice to make a couple of good runs," Dixon said. "We ran 4.55 both passes, which was third quickest of each session. That's something we can build off of. We still ended up eighth. I'm not thrilled about that, but those are the cards we're dealt and we'll build upon that."
Dixon, who has been in the winner's circle at the Ohio facility the past three years, will battle No. 9 qualifier David Grubnic in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday. This marks the seconds straight race that Dixon and Grubnic will meet in the first round of eliminations. Dixon has an 11-2 career record against the Australian native.
ESPN2 will televise 60 minutes of qualifying highlights from the Pontiac Excitement Nationals at 6 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, June 12 and show three hours of final elimination coverage at 3 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, June 13.
