Defending NHR Powerade champ Larry Dixon looks for three in a row in Columbus
COLUMBUS, OH. (June 10th)- Defending Pontiac Excitement Nationals Top Fuel Champion Larry Dixon and the Miller Lite dragster are aiming for a third consecutive title in Columbus, Ohio for the 39th Annual Pontiac Excitement NHRA Nationals June 12th-15th.
Dixon and the Don Prudhomme Miller Lite Dragster have a successful history when visiting Columbus; including a 2001 win over Darrell Russell and a 2002 win over Doug Herbert. They would like nothing more than to make it three in a row as they did earlier this year in Las Vegas, NV. But Dixon isn't thinking about this, instead he's merely hoping to qualify.
"We just try and win whatever race is in front of us. For me, it's (Columbus) s a very prestigious race because it's a race that's been on the tour for a while. And it's father day. It's a neat place; we just try and do well there," says Dixon. "For the past couple years we've done well, I can go in there and try; sometimes you're successful, sometimes you're not. All I'm worried about right now is trying to qualify for the race."
A special race on a special weekend. Headed into the Father's Day weekend Dixon was asked if there are any special racing memories shared with his two children, Donovan and Alana.
"They're all good memories; there isn't one over another," said Dixon. "We've done pretty well these last two years. I think it's pretty cool I have a job where I can take my family with me."
After advancing to his seventh final of the series (W-Pomona, L-Phoenix, W-Las Vegas, W-Atlanta, L-Englishtown, W-Topeka, W-Joliet) and 54th of his career, Dixon and the Miller Lite crew packed up and headed home for Indy. Much of the past week was spent in the shop preparing the back up dragster.
"The crew and I have spent this time preparing a third race car in case we lose another one," said Dixon. "At this point we're just tying to get our 2001 car up to 2003 standards, until we get the new chasse that Murhps' building for us later in the summer; until it can be delivered. We don't want to be caught unprepared if it's not necessary."
You can bet the team will be prepared to gain a third consecutive title when visiting Columbus, OH for the 39th Annual Pontiac Excitement NHRA Nationals (June 12th-15th).
