Collis debuts the G Squared/S&S Cycle Buell No. 2 at Columbus
HEBRON, Ohio, (June 12 2004) -- The debut of the G Squared/S&S Cycle Buell, powered by an S&S Cycle V-Twin, was a success.
Fred Collis from Americus, Ga., drove to a No. 2 qualifying position at the NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment at National Trail Raceway..
In the final qualifying session, Collis, aboard the G Squared/S&S Cycle Buell, which is in its first competition at an NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event, recorded a 7.127-second elapsed time at a speed of 181.30 mph. In tomorrow's eliminations he will face Keith Dennis, from Memphis, Tenn., who qualified 15th with a pass of 7.282 seconds at 184.40 mph.
"This new G Squared/S&S Cycle Buell has been a cool thing to ride since the beginning of testing," said Collis, the defending event champion in Pro Stock Bike. We knew after we tested recently in Atlanta that it was time to move to actual NHRA competition. For a new bike our times were average up to that last run. So when a 12 (7.12 seconds) came up the board everyone was excited. The G Squared/S&S Cycle Buell is rockin'. We're going to go out there tomorrow and do the best we can."
Added George Bryce, who along with George Smith, part owner of S&S Cycle, Incorporated, are partners in G Squared Motorsports, "The fastest run on that bike up to that last run was a 25 (7.25 seconds) so we were hoping to sink into the teens. For the last couple of weeks our data has shown that this G Squared/S&S Cycle Buell has potential, but Fred had to make a really good lap in order for us to see how quick it would go. For sure on that last lap he did everything right. We've got to keep working and see where we go from here.
"One thing I hope this weekend has done is open the eyes of the decision makers of corporate America. We are continuing to try and find a marketing partner that will team up with us and give Star Racing and S&S Cycle the opportunity to pursue an NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Bike championship."
Grinning about today's results, George Smith said the following," We're pleased that the debut went as well as it did. The power for this bike is a V-Twin from S&S Cycle. The guys that work on these engines at S&S and the entire team at Star Racing are all-stars. Remember our slogan at S&S Cycle is: We race what we sell and we sell what we race. And in this case, we're taking orders on this G Squared/S&S Cycle Buell."
Final eliminations for all classes get underway on Sunday at 11 a.m. Subject to change, same-day television coverage of eliminations can be seen on ESPN2 on Sunday (June 13) from 3-6 p.m. All times are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
