COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 18, 2000 - Doug Herbert is a little confused. His Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster is running good, competitive elapsed times and speeds, yet he hasn't been able to capitalize on it during NHRA races.

He'd hoped things would change at the Pontiac Excitement Nationals Sunday at National Trail Raceway and he'd win his second straight event at the track. But it didn't.

Herbert's 4.768 at 309.34 mph first-round run was beaten by David Grubnic's 4.745 at 304.94.

"It's depressing," said Herbert. "The car is running good enough to win some rounds but we haven't been able to do that. And we kicked a rod out of the block when I shut off the motor, to top it all off.

Rain played havoc with the event, washing out one Friday qualifying session and delaying eliminations two hours. Missing that one qualifying session, Herbert pointed out, hurt him, too. He wound up eighth overall.

"We were backed into a corner because we needed a good run in the last qualifying session," Herbert said. "(Crew chief Larry) Frazier just wanted to get the car down the track and we ran 4.733.

Herbert, who stayed eight with 410 points, doesn't have to wait long to return to competition. The Sears Craftsman Nationals, the season's only night race, runs Thursday through Sunday at Madison, Ill., across the Mississippi River from St. Louis.

Qualified: No. 8, 4.733 seconds at 313.73 mph

First round: David Grubnic def. Herbert

Pro Winners: Tony Schumacher in Top Fuel; Tony Pedregon in Funny Car; Mark Pawuk in Pro Stock.
