Cory Mac busy at Pontiac Excitement Nationals
HEBRON, Ohio (June 9, 2004) -- Today begins a busy weekend for Cory McClenathan at the NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing Equipment. In addition to driving the Carrier Boyz Racing Berryman Products Top Fuel dragster, the veteran driver has several pre-race appearances today and tomorrow for event sponsor Pontiac.
First is the pre-event NHRA press conference at noon today, followed by GM's biggest dealer promotion of the year at Dave Gill Pontiac-GMC. The Dave Gill Pontiac-GMC Fanfest will get underway at 4 p.m., ending at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to come out and see the drivers and the cars that make NHRA drag racing the world's fastest motorsports. In addition to Cory Mac, numerous other drivers will be on hand to greet the fans, sign autographs and sell souvenir apparel.
Tomorrow, McClenathan, along with other drivers, will visit the Columbus Children's Hospital from 12:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. This is one of the more emotional and uplifting times and the drivers look forward to their visit.
"Yes, I'll be busy this weekend," said McClenathan, "but I wouldn't want it any other way. I enjoy the promotional side of racing. It's hard to single out one thing or one promotion as my favorite.
"The visit to the Children's Hospital is always emotional, but you learn how to face any and every adversity that life can throw at you simply by visiting these kids. The attitude of these kids is amazing. Also, year after year, the fans of the Columbus turn out to the Fanfest at Dave Gill Pontiac-GMC. I can't believe the numbers that show up. Thanks to Pontiac, all of Columbus must be there.
"I'll be busy, but I enjoy representing sponsors. We wouldn't be doing what we do if it weren't for event sponsors like GM Racing and Pontiac and our team marketing partners Berryman Products, American Racing, Champion Spark Plugs, Don Steves Chevrolet (La Habra, Calif.), Fabtech Motorsports, FRAM, Mac Tools, Negley Electric, Prestone and PurePower Oil."
After the promotional aspect of the event is ended, the racing begins. Professional qualifying for the nitro classes opens with two sessions on Friday at 5 and 8 p.m. and two final qualifying sessions on Saturday at 1 and 3:30 p.m.. Final eliminations for all classes get underway on Sunday at 11 a.m. The schedule is subject to change. Times are Eastern Daylight Time (CDT).
Over the last three events, Carrier Boyz Racing, led by crew chief Todd Smith, have been on a roll winning the Atlanta event and qualifying No. 1 at the Topeka race. Entering this weekend's event, Cory Mac is fourth in the Top Fuel POWERade point standings with 523 points.
Qualifying highlights of the Pontiac Excitement Nationals can be seen on ESPN on Saturday (June 12) from 7-8 pm. Then, ESPN2 will air same-day television coverage of eliminations from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday (June 13). Television times are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) and subject to change at anytime.
