CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 15) -- With the NHRA's Countdown to the Championship underway, teams on the fringe might feel the temptation to try something radical to keep up with the rest of the field.

For Morgan Lucas and the GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster, this weekend's third annual O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals is the time to race smart and resist the urge to take those unnecessary risks.

"We're going to have to work the racetrack as much as it wants to be worked," Lucas said. "We've just got to be smart and race smart. We need to go to Charlotte with what we learned at Indy, and if we race smart and stay within what we can do, then we'll have a chance to win."

Lucas had a solid start to the Countdown with a round win at the U.S. Nationals. He's in eighth place in the standings, 14 points behind seventh place Antron Brown.

"Charlotte is a beautiful facility," Lucas said. "We've not had a lot of luck there, but there's no reason why it won't change now."

Lucas lost to eventual race champion Cory McClenathan at last year's fall race in Charlotte and qualified mid-pack at the 4-Wide Nationals this past spring. The sport's youngest nitro professional said his team has learned a lot since that early season race and believes anything can happen this time through.

"We're planning to go down there and put on a good show," Lucas said. "Who knows, we might stumble on to something and put on a clinic."
