Burgess beats teammate Commisso to open Pro Mod eliminations
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Sept. 18) -- When two teammates face off in the opening round of a drag race, the victory is bittersweet.
That was the case Saturday for the R2B2 Racing cars in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Series at the O'Reilly Auto Parts Nationals at zMax Dragway whenteammates Roger Burgess and Raymond Commisso squared off in the first round of eliminations.
"In a way you can't lose in a race like that," Burgess said. "But you hate to have to beat your teammate. You'd rather beat anybody else."
Burgess got the upper hand on Saturday in his Camaro, winning on a holeshot with a pass of 5.982 at 243.63 mph with a reaction time of .003 seconds. Commisso's time in his Firebird was a 5.978 at 244.45 mph with a reaction time of .084.
"Raymond's car really ran well for the first time all weekend," Burgess said. "I was way too close to that light. It was a good side-by-side race."
Commisso said he didn't mind because it got one of his teammate's cars one step closer to victory circle for the first time this season.
"Roger wished me good luck before the race," Commisso said. "I told him it didn't matter as long as one of our R2B2 cars go to the final and win. I don't care if it's me, you or Melanie Troxel. We're here as a team and we race like a team.
"My teammate just won and that's how it goes. Hopefully I'll get the next one."
Burgess qualified his R2B2 Racing Camaro in the No. 3 spot with a best lap of 5.922 seconds at 246.66 mph. Commisso was 14th with a 6.045 at 241.50 mph.
"Even though I won that race against Raymond, I still had to pedal," Burgess said. "We'll take a look at it and see what happened. Hopefully we'll get a little bit quicker and a little bit straighter."
Burgess advances to face Mike Janis in the second round of eliminations. Janis advanced when Danny Rowe red lighted in their race.
