ANTRON BROWN RACES TO QUARTERFINALS AT CHARLOTTE 2
CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 19, 2010) - Antron Brown raced his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to a quarterfinal finish Sunday afternoon at zMax Dragway at Concord. The 24-time NHRA winner now ranks sixth in the Countdown to 1 standings.
Brown, who qualified his Matco Tools/U.S. Army car in the No. 2 position at 3.832-seconds on Friday evening at zMax Dragway, bested No. 15 qualifier Troy Buff before falling to perennial title contender Doug Kalitta in the second round. Brown now has a mark of 27-19 in 19 races this season and is 1-2 in the first two races in the Countdown to 1.
Squaring off against Buff for the second time this season, the Matco Tools/U.S. Army rail scored the wire-to-wire win. Brown got the jump at the start and raced to a solid lap of 3.914 seconds at 314.17 mph. Buff's black dragster lost traction early and coasted to an elapsed time of 25.836-seconds. It was Brown's 335th career round win. He is now 5-1 against Buff.
Facing Kalitta for the third time this season, Brown got the jump at the start, but his bright blue Matco-backed rail didn't make it passed the Christmas Tree before smoking the tires allowing Kalitta to race to the easy win. Kalitta's rail lost traction and clocked a pass of 4.442 at 246.17 to advance to the semifinals. Brown's car coasted to a lap of 7.181 at 111.94 He is now 3-3 against Kalitta this season and 9-6 in 15 career matches.
"It was just tough out there; we never got a handle on this hot race track this weekend here at zMax (Dragway)," Brown said. "We're going to test on Monday and try to learn how to race our Matco Tools car on a hot track. That second round was crazy with us, Tony (Schumacher) and Hot Rod (Fuller) all smoking the tires at the hit of the throttle. Our cars normally don't do that."
The next NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event is the 25th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Fall Nationals, Sept. 24-26, at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas. Brown won his first career NHRA race at the Dallas race in 1999.
