McCLENATHAN, FOUR OTHERS WIN ON GOODYEARS AT zMAX
CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 21, 2009) -- Top Fuel racer Cory McClenathan grabbed his first win in more than a year, leading a group of five Goodyear-equipped drivers to wins in the Carolinas NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway here Sunday.
The other Goodyear winners included Robert Hight (Funny Car), Mike Edwards (Pro Stock), Bill Reichert (Top Alcohol Dragster) and Rick Brown (Competition Eliminator).
"Our Goodyear Eagles performed well this weekend, as expected," said Carolyn Ashbee, Goodyear's sales account manager for drag racing. "The event was highlighted by Goodyear leading all tiremakers in wins and the exhibition runs of dragsters and funny cars going four-wide was a big thrill for everyone."
The zMAX Dragway is the only venue on the NHRA schedule with four lanes. Four teams in each of the nitro classes volunteered to make a single run filling each lane. The exhibition was not part of the competition.
The race was the first of the 2009 Countdown, the first for the NHRA's new point system for each qualifying round and the first during which points were available for national records for the 1,000-foot distance for the nitro classes.
"The tires were great this weekend," McClenathan said.
McClenathan's win vaulted him into the lead of the Top Fuel standings in the NHRA's Countdown to One championship race. Antron Brown and Tony Schumacher trail McClenathan 2,162-2,152. McClenathan beat Shawn Langdon in the final round.
Hight's win was his first in a year and came at the expense of rookie Matt Hagan. Hight started the event 10th in the standings and finished it in third. Tony Pedregon leads Ashley Force Hood 2,148-2,147 in the Funny Car points.
Edwards, 52, used the win to take the lead in the Pro Stock standings, the first time in his career he has led the Pro Stock category.
"To be in the lead is a dream come true," Edwards said. "There's a long way to go, but I like our position."
Edwards leads Jeg Coughlin 2,198-2,142 in the standings.
