BROWN RACES MATCO TOOLS RAIL TO NO. 3 SPOT FRIDAY AT CHARLOTTE
CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 12, 2008) -- Antron Brown powered his David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster to the provisional No. 3 qualifying position at zMax Dragway at Concord after clocking an elapsed time of 3.865-seconds.
Brown enters the six-race Countdown to 1 playoff ranked second in the NHRA Top Fuel standings trailing category-leader Tony Schumacher by 30 points. The 18-time NHRA winner's Matco Tools dragster overpowered the zMax Dragway strip on Friday's opening qualifying session as Brown coasted to a pass of 4.835 seconds at 154.42 mph. That placed Brown in the No. 16 position. Crew chief Lee Beard and the Matco Tools crew made the right adjustments as the two-time Top Fuel winner (Houston and Atlanta) clocked a blistering pass of 3.865 at 311.20 to finish third in the 12-car provisional order. Brown, who was paired against J.R. Todd on Friday's second attempt, was the second set of dragster to make a qualifying lap on Friday evening.
"Like always, my Matco boys did an awesome job," Brown said. "Lee (Beard)and the gang tuned this Matco Tools Iron Eagle dragster up and we went to the top of the board. We stayed No. 1 for awhile until Cory (McClenathan) and (Larry) Dixon just nipped us. But it's all good. We're happy with that and we're going try and make some good runs in the heat of the day tomorrow."
Professional nitro qualifying resumes Saturday afternoon at the spectacular new Concord track with sessions scheduled for Noon and 3:30 p.m. (ET).
