What's NHRA Funny Car driver Ron Capps doing in a print advertisement for a Yamaha guitar? No, Capps - a long-time rock and roll fan - isn't changing professions. He was asked to appear in the upcoming ad by Michael Anthony, Van Halen's bass guitarist. The ad is for Yamaha's new Michael Anthony Signature guitar. "It was quite an honor to have Michael ask me to be in the ad," said Capps, driver of Don Prudhomme's U.S. Tobacco Co.-backed Funny Car. "Michael is a huge drag racing fan and I'm a huge Van Halen fan. We developed a good friendship and now there's a good friendship between his family and mine." Capps and his wife Shelley attended the recent photo shoot at Peppers Restaurant in Arcadia, Calif. "They had a couple of Michael's street rods in the parking lot," said Capps. "I was in one of the cars and Shelley and two models were around the cars. Michael was out front and we were in the background. "I've never done anything like that," Capps continued. "They had a lot of make-up people there. It took about four hours to get all the photos they needed." The ads touting Anthony's new signature guitar will be in music industry magazines. "I never thought I'd be in a music magazine ad for a Michael Anthony guitar," Capps concluded. "That's awesome." Capps, incidentally, cannot play a guitar. Then again, Michael Anthony can't drive a Funny Car.
