CUNNINGHAM TEAM MEMBERS DEVELOP BETTER BOND
LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2011) – On the surface, it looks as if a rough, hot weekend is all Cunningham Motorsports and driver Buddy Perkinson will take away from the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas this weekend. The team did not make the show, but managed to continue building trust, respect and appreciation among team members.
The 19-year-old driver feels like this weekend was beneficial for Cunningham Motorsports as a whole, not only to learn more about the car, but also for team-building purposes.
“This weekend was a lot different than what we’ve been used to, team wise. Each time we went to the starting line, I knew everything we had done to the car. I knew the chances of it shaking and our chances of slipping the clutch, which I did when Bob was with us too, but it was definitely more of a team thing this time,” said Perkinson. “I really had a good feeling of what the car was supposed to do before we ever even went to the starting line, because the four of us sat in the trailer and we all made the decisions together. I got asked my opinion along with everybody else and that just really made me feel like a part of the team that I had never really felt before.”
The team ran a 6.783 ET (elapsed time) in their fourth qualifying run, but after problems earlier in the weekend, it was too late for recovery. “That last pass was only four-thousandths off (from qualifying) and for how much we struggled this weekend, that was a good pass for us. We’ll get there,” added Perkinson.
Next, the team is headed to Richmond, Virginia (Perkinson’s hometown track) to test new parts and cut in new tires for the car.
“Yes, we did struggle this weekend, but we’re going to do some testing before Charlotte and I really think we’re going to be just fine as long as we continue to work together. I really do. We should get all of our parts in before the truck gets back to the shop. We’ll have our motors freshened up and ready to go quickly. We have some new intakes and new things we’d like to try; some carburetors for sure. I believe we’re going to go to Virginia Motorsports Park the weekend before four-wide and test there. We’re not going to do anything drastic, we just need to get more data for the four of us to make better decisions,” Perkinson said.
After testing April 8-10, Perkinson and the Cunningham Motorsports team will head to Charlotte, North Carolina for the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway, April 15-17.
