BRISTOL, Tenn. - Veteran Pro Modified driver Ed Hoover rewarded car owner Paul Trussell with a preliminary qualifying spot in the eight-car, Pro Modified exhibition at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn. Hoover, 40, of Columbia, SC., currently resides in the fifth position with a 6.353, 219.83.

The reason that this event is so special for the construction magnate Trussell is that he grew up in the Johnson City, Tennessee area. He is a graduate from East Tennessee State University.

"We have a lot of family out here watching the race today," explained Trussell. "I am thankful that the NHRA invited us to participate because this track is special to me. I hope we can hold our place in the field and be around on Sunday."

Hoover expects more performance out the team's 1963 Corvette in the second day of qualifications.

"We have more in this car," explained Hoover, who is credited with winning the first-ever Pro Modified event in 1990. "We missed the clutch on the first attempt, but we were much closer on the second one. I think we'll do better today."
