Tony Pedregon Looking For Third Straight Pole In Bristol
Bristol, Tenn., April 26, 2004 -- Defending Funny Car champion, Tony Pedregon heads to Bristol, Tenn. this weekend for the sixth race on the NHRA POWERade series schedule. In the three years the series has been racing a national event at Bristol Dragway, Pedregon has been the top qualifier twice (2003, '02) and holds the track record elapsed time of 4.765 seconds set last year.
This season, Pedregon, will arrive into Bristol for the first time as team owner and driver of the Quaker State Funny Car, and you can guarantee the team, along with crew chief, Dickie Venables will be looking to continue the streak and make it three in a row when qualifying begins on Friday.
"At this point I'm starting to feel we're beyond the 'new team' stage," said Pedregon. "The performance of the car has exceeded some of the expectations we had in the beginning of the year with the runner up in Phoenix and the low E.T. in Las Vegas. We've showed a lot of potential in a short amount of time. We know the performance is there to go after the number one position but it's an accomplishment to just qualify in this class."
In his ten years in Funny Car competition, the 39-year old has been the top qualifier at 26 events, including Las Vegas this season. He's won seven events and earned three runner up finishes from the pole position.
Pedregon will be making his 192nd career Funny Car start this weekend and will be racing for his 28th career win.
The Quaker State racing team will begin qualifying on Friday, April 30th with two rounds slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Two more rounds of qualifying are scheduled for Saturday, May, 1 at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Final eliminations are on Sunday, May 2, at 11:00 a.m.
