JOHNSON JR. FINISHES SIXTH DURING RAIN-SHORTENED QUALIFYING AT BRISTOL

BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 30, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. and his Skoal RacingSM team took advantage of their only qualifying passof the weekendSaturday at Bristol Dragway when the veteran driver powered to the sixth qualifying position with an elapsed time of 4.857-seconds.

After both of Friday's qualifying sessions were washed out due to persistent rain showers, Johnson used a tune-up from veteran crew chief Mike Green to power Don Prudhomme's Chevy flopper to a run of 4.857 seconds at 318.02 mph. It was an excellent driving job by the seasoned Funny Car pilot as Johnson had to lift of the throttle and pedal the race car early in the run, which positioned himself in the top half of the order to earn lane choice in the opening round of eliminations. Saturday's second scheduled qualifying session was canceled after rain showers blanketed the race track for most of the afternoon. NHRA officials decided to set the field after just one qualifying session was completed.

"I'm really happy with the way the car ran on the one pass today," Johnson said. "We ran a 4.85 even though I had to pedal the car. I'm confident that we can run a 4.70, which is what it's going to take to beat Bazemore. The weather shouldn't affect us at all. I'm very happy with the way things are going."

Johnson will match up against current Funny Car points leader Whit Bazemore, who qualified 11th, when eliminations kick off at noon (ET) on Sunday afternoon in Thunder Valley. Johnson defeated Bazemore in the semifinals at the season-opening Winternationals in their only 2005 meeting, and is 9-12 is his career against the veteran flopper pilot.
