Johnson Jr. Suffers First Round Setback At Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 3, 2004) -- Despite recording his best elapsed time of the 2004 NHRA season and clocking a career-best speed, Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car suffered an opening round setback Monday at Bristol Dragway.

Johnson blasted his Mike Green-tuned Chevy flopper to low elapsed time of the opening round with a performance of 4.799 seconds at 323.97 mph. However, Johnson's performance was not enough to overcome a disadvantage at the starting line and Gary Scelzi drove to the win with a run of 4.879 at 289.60. Johnson's previous career-best speed was 323.74 mph.

"I hate to make excuses, but this is one of the disadvantages of wearing glasses," Johnson said. "My glasses fogged up and I couldn't see a thing. Rarely does that happen, but it's hot in the car and the cold weather here at Bristol today wasn't a good combination. It's really hard because the car ran so good. The car runs well and something like this bites us. It's frustrating."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 24th annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals, May 13-16, at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.
