JOHNSON JR. EARNS QUARTERFINAL FINISH AT BRISTOL

BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 30, 2006) - Tommy Johnson Jr. remains third in the NHRA Funny Car standings after driving his Skoal RacingSM Funny Car to a quarterfinal effort Sunday at Bristol Dragway.

After earning the No. 5 qualifying position for the second straight event, the Iowa native used a tune-up from crew chief Mike Green to score the come-from-behind victory over veteran racer Tony Pedregon. Johnson drove to a run of 4.817 seconds at 323.97 mph, while Pedregon's flopper lost traction down track and recorded a pass of 5.314 seconds.

"I thought my light was decent, but Tony (Pedregon) went for it and had a killer light (.027 of-a-second)," Johnson said. "I was a little nervous there, but he had problems and we went by him and took the win. It was a nice opening run."

In the second round of eliminations, Johnson matched-up against defending series champion Gary Scelzi for the second consecutive event. Johnson clocked a run of 4.823 at 318.32, but it wasn't enough as Scelzi earned the trip to the semifinals by recording a 4.778, 323.35 run. Johnson and Scelzi have a 1-1 record during eliminations this season.

"We came out and repeated," Johnson said. "Our car is running good. We didn't beat ourselves. There were only two guys that could have beaten us that round and unfortunately, we ran one of them."
