ROOKIE CARLSON MISSES BRISTOL QUALIFYING, LOOKS FORWARD TO ATLANTA NEXT WEEKEND

BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 29, 2006) - Pro Stock Rookie Shaun Carlson missed qualifying for the 16-car field this weekend at the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

He fought changing track conditions and some bad luck, as the Team Mopar/SRT Dodge Stratus R/T suffered a parts failure Saturday morning in a session that saw favorable conditions, in which most NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series teams locked in their qualifying positions.

"Last night we changed engines and the transmission," explained Carlson. "This morning we had a transmission problem when the car popped out of second gear during the run. It was really bad timing because that is when all the other cars were getting their best times."

His four qualifying runs produced a 6.825-second elapsed time at 201.79 mph, a 6.795/202.30, a tire-shaking 13.059/64.19, and a 6.857/202.52.

Despite not qualifying, he is not looking back and is already eager to get to next weekend's NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. "We have a lot of data from testing there last week. I think that will be a big advantage for us, as we won't have to guess on a setup heading into qualifying. It's not like the weather conditions are really going to change much in 10 days.

"I feel very comfortable with everything that is going on," he continued. "I think the team is working well together with all of the changes: new people, new parts, and the learning curve involved with that. It's hard to accept that we didn't qualify, but it's definitely been a stepping stone for the next race."
