Capps Sits Ninth After Friday Qualifying At Thunder Valley

JBRISTOL, Tenn. (April 30, 2004) -- Ron Capps powered his Skoal Racing(SM) Chevy Funny Car into the ninth qualifying position Friday following the first two qualifying sessions at Bristol Dragway.

Capps piloted his John Stewart-tuned Chevy to a performance of 4.922 seconds at 313.00 mph on the opening qualifying pass. Capps improved on his second attempt, driving his Don Prudhomme-owned flopper to a run of 4.915 at 274.72 to position himself in the No. 9 spot at Thunder Valley.

"On the second run, we were trying to run 4.79 or 4.80 and it had great numbers and got down near the end of the track and suffered an ignition problem, so I clicked if off early," Capps said. "To click it early and still run a 4.91 is pretty impressive. We're real happy with what the car is doing.

"The results that we've experience have not shown the progress that we've made with this Skoal Racing Monte Carlo. Unless you're on this side of the fence, you really don't know how much progress we've made with the car. We feel like we can run a low 4.80 in these conditions this weekend."

Funny Car qualifying resumes at 1 and 4 p.m. (ET) on Saturday as Capps aims to build upon his No. 9 position.
