Top fuel points leader Larry Dixon qualifies no. 2 after Friday's action at Bristol Dragway at Thunder Valley

BRISTOL, TENN. (April 26) - NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Top Fuel points leader Larry Dixon and the Miller Lite Snake Racing Dragster continued to excel in qualifying as they posted a lap of 4.603 seconds (319.60 mph) to claim the early No. 2 spot Friday during the opening day of the Second Annual Mac Tools Thunder Valley Nationals.

Entering the weekend with a 65-point cushion in the Top Fuel points race, Dixon looked to rebound from last week's disappointing parts breakage (input shaft), which resulted in his first opening round setback since October 2000. His first run "out of the box" showed that crew chief Dick LaHaie and the Miller Lite team solved the problem as they produced the second-quickest lap of the day with their pass of 4.602 seconds at 319.60 mph. Solidly in the field after the afternoon session, Dixon and his gang tried to take advantage of the cold air in the evening but overpowered the track to a pass of 9.252 seconds (90.37 mph).

"We kind of set it up for a baseline run to get down the race track, and it went fairly well," said Dixon. "That run let us know that we are going to be comfortably qualified in the field. You're night sessions you can try and go for broke and your day session on Saturday you can try and set up for race day. It also gives us one less thing to worry about this weekend."

Dixon has qualified no worse than fourth this season (Houston) and has three No. 1 qualifying efforts (Pomona, Gainesville, Las Vegas) and a second place effort (Phoenix). His career track record at Bristol Dragway includes a No. 3, 6 and 11 qualifying result. Two qualifying sessions remain on Saturday (1:00 & 4:00 PM ET) while Sunday's elimination round is scheduled for an 11 AM ET start.
