Three-time Bristol champ Doug Kalitta leads Team Kalitta into eliminations
BRISTOL, Tenn., (July 7, 2007) -- Doug Kalitta, driver of the 8,000-horsepower Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, will lead the entire nitro-fueled Kalitta Motorsports team into Sunday's final eliminations after qualifying No. 5 (4.611 seconds, 328.62 mph) at the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tenn.
Doug, who has won the previous two annual events at Bristol Dragway and the inaugural event at the new Thunder Valley in 2001, posted his best qualifying effort of the 2007 NHRA POWERade season since the opening event in Pomona, Calif. (No. 4) and will race No. 12 qualifier Morgan Lucas, 4.666 sec., 324.12 mph, in the opening round when the 16-car Top Fuel final eliminations begin at noon tomorrow.
Doug's Team Kalitta Top Fuel teammate and native Australian Dave Grubnic, driver of the Zantrex-3 dragster, qualified in the No. 15 slot for eliminations, 4.673 sec., 323.43 mph. Grubnic and his team will roll their black and blue rail to the starting line to face No. 2 qualifier Whit Bazemore, 4.547 sec., 327.43 mph, for their first round match-up.
Scott Kalitta, driver of the DHL Toyota Solara Funny Car, qualified his yellow and red flopper in the No. 12 position (4.888 sec., 311.20 mph) for Funny Car's 16-car final eliminations field. Scott, who won two world championships in a Top Fuel dragster (1994-'95) will race 14-time POWERade points champion and No. 5 qualifier John Force, 4.853 sec., 292.46 mph, in the opening stanza of eliminations.
Hillary Will, driver of the Kalitta Motorsports-managed, Ken Black-owned KB Racing LLC Top Fueler, qualified in the No. 9 position for eliminations.
