BRISTOL, Tenn., April 29, 2001 - Doug Herbert did his job at the starting line Sunday in the opening round of the Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway, but his Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster spun the tires past half-track.

The result: A frustrating end to his competitive day.

Herbert left the starting line first with a .480 reaction time, but Tony Schumacher got to the finish line first with at 4.687 seconds at 307.44 mph compared to Herbert's 4.846 at 268.28 mph.

"We still need to get a handle on slippery conditions in the middle of the track," Herbert commented. "We drew a tough car in the first round and knew we wouldn't win if we ran in the 4.70s. We thought what we needed was a 4.57 or 4.58 (seconds). We have the equipment to run well.

"We'd hoped to work on our tune-up during qualifying Saturday so we could tune the car for race day but we had clutch problems and that set us back a little."

Herbert, eighth in Winston Series points with 265, will be back in action Friday in the Advance Auto Parts Nationals, May 3-6, at Commerce, Ga.

Qualified: No. 5, 4.639 seconds at 310.98 mph
First round: Tony Schumacher def. Herbert.

Race winners: Doug Kalitta, Top Fuel; Ron Capps, Funny Car; Greg Anderson, Pro Stock.
