Troxel 11th Qualifier, Ashley 13th after First Day at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn., May 16, 2008 -- Gotham City Racing teammates Melanie Troxel and Mike Anthony got their O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals Funny Car qualifying off to a good side-by-side start Friday afternoon at Bristol Dragway with elapsed times of 4.839 and 4.845 seconds, respectively.

By the time qualifying was completed several hours later, Troxel was 11th in the ProCare Rx Dodge Charger and Ashley 13th in the Lend America/ProCare Rx/Gotham City Racing Dodge Charger R/T. They have two more qualifying attempts Saturday to improve their positions.

Neither car made it to the finish line under power on the second run. Ashley's Dodge lost traction and he lifted early, coasting to the line in 9.907 seconds. Troxel, however, appeared to be on a good run before the engine dropped cylinders and pushed out a head gasket. Her time was 5.030 seconds.

"That was a good way to start qualifying," Troxel said, "and we're qualified and the car is going down the track. The guys are trying to track down the engine problem we've had."

The crew did a quick fuel-tank change while awaiting its second run. The leak was discovered when the car was in the staging lanes and crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald made the call to return to the pit area and install a new one.

"The leak was in the back of the fuel tank and we didn't see it until we were in line," Troxel said. "The guys made the decision to put in the new one. Fortunately, we had the time."
