Herbert runner-up at Bristol.

BRISTOL, Tenn., April 27, 2003 - Doug Herbert battled his way through mechanical problems during qualifying all the way to the finals of Sunday's Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

That's where his title run was ended by current driving sensation Brandon Bernstein.

On paper, Herbert was the favorite on the last run. He'd run the two quickest times of the quarterfinals and semifinals (4.610 and 4.661 seconds) in the Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster while Bernstein struggled with three straight 5-second times.

But Herbert's car spun the tires on the run and he had to pedal the throttle. That slowed him to a 4.880 at 282.72 while Bernstein had his quickest run of eliminations, 4.625 seconds.

"We don't know why it spun the tires," Herbert said. "But we made tuning progress in the last two races, going to the semifinals two weeks ago and to the finals here. We killed some parts this weekend, but at least we learned some things.

"We were feeling pretty confident before the finals," added Herbert, "but when they needed to get down the track they did."

He also climbed into fourth position in the standings with 361 points.

Herbert suffered three blower explosions during the weekend, but the team will have plenty of parts ready for this weekend's Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Commerce, Ga.
