CRUZ PEDREGON AND THE ADVANCE AUTO PARTS RACE TEAM FOCUS ON ATLANTA AFTER A CHALLENGING WEEKEND IN BRISTOL
(BRISTOL, Tenn., May 1): Cruz Pedregon and his Advance Auto Parts Race Team qualified 14th for the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway this past weekend in the NHRA Nitro Funny Car class, but suffered a tough first round loss during eliminations on Sunday.
"We're disappointed -- it was a tough weekend for us - but we're still in the top 10 in points (7th)," Pedregon said after the race on Sunday. "We'll just go on to Atlanta and start over. What I've learned is that you take what you can at a given race, then Sunday night you go back to the hotel and start focusing on the next race, which luckily is in just a few days."
Even though the efforts the Advance Auto Parts Team put into the weekend did not result in another winner's circle visit like they had in Las Vegas two weeks earlier, Pedregon remained positive and is looking forward to next week's race in Atlanta: "We actually weren't horrible in Bristol. We made three out of four qualifying runs - we didn't fall on our faces. We were in a great position after the first round of qualifying. In the third round, we were actually the second-quickest car. We just didn't have the consistency we wanted after that. The car did not launch like we thought it should and we just smoked the tires. Whatever plagued us here also got Tony, too, because we both ran about the same all weekend. In talking to Tony's crew chief Dickie Venable after the race, we feel we understand what direction we need to go moving forward to Atlanta and beyond. We're going to take this, combine the information both of our teams learned and go to Atlanta with a positive attitude."
In 2005, Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Race Team finished for the second consecutive year in the top 10 in points, was #1 qualifier twice and recorded a career best ET speed of 4.680 seconds at 330.80mph.
NEXT RACE: NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, Ga., May 5-7, 2006
