ANTRON BROWN GRABS PROVISIONAL POLE FRIDAY AT BRISTOL
BRISTOL, Tenn. (June 18, 2010) - Antron Brown raced his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to the provisional No. 1 qualifying position Friday evening at Bristol Dragway. The former college track star blistered the Bristol Dragway strip in 3.856-seconds Friday evening under the lights at Thunder Valley as he looks to earn a fourth pole of the 2010 NHRA season.
Brown, who enters the 11th race on the 2010 NHRA schedule ranked fifth in the NHRA Top Fuel standings, opened qualifying at the 10th annual Thunder Valley Nationals with the fifth quickest pass of Friday's opening qualifying session. The 24-time NHRA winner powered his bright blue Matco Tools/U.S. Army rail to a lap of 3.996 seconds at 301.00 mph. Brown clocked the first 300-mph pass of the session. On his second attempt, Brown used a tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to pace the Top Fuel field. The Matco-backed rail clocked a run of 3.856 at 314.24 to post the quickest and fastest run of the day earning Brown three bonus points. If the time holds on Saturday, Brown will earn his fourth No. 1 qualifying award of the season and 25th of his career.
"We made two great runs today," Brown said. "It was stupid how good that night run was. Our Matco Tools car continues to just run awesome here at DSR. We have a great tune-up at this track here at Bristol. Last year, we ran that great 319 (mph) speed to set the national record. We've just lost some really close races. This is a great start to the weekend and our goal is to get back to another final round on Sunday."
Professional nitro qualifying resumes on Saturday afternoon at Bristol Dragway with sessions scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m. (ET). Top Fuel will run first followed by Funny Car. Brown has qualified fourth and seventh in two tries at the Bristol track but has yet to advance past the second round of eliminations.
