Bristol, Tenn. (April 27): Racing in the inaugural national event at the new and improved Bristol Motor Speedway quater-mile track, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher finished the first day of qualifying for the Mac Tools Thunder Valley Nationals in the No. 12 position.

Schumacher opened the first round of qualifying with a 4.852 et at 236.71 mph, despite shutting the car off well before the 1320 foot finish line mark.

"We had some good numbers down low," said Schumacher. "I saw Herbert go around me and thought we were having problems, so I clicked it."

In the cool evening air during the second session, the U.S. Army team looked to improve on their earlier performance, only to be disappointed as they overpowered the track on the hit of the throttle and smoked the tires.

"We were surprised by that," said "The Sarge" referring to the tire smoke that seldom occurs on Schumacher's Dan Olson-tuned dragster. "We'll get it all figured out for tomorrow."

Schumacher will have two additional qualifying attempts on Saturday in preparation for Sunday's Final Eliminations.
