JOHNSON JR. MAKES SECOND QUICKEST RUN OF CAREER; QUALIFIES SECOND AT BRAINERD
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 13, 2005) Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny to the second quickest run of his driving career Saturday at Brainerd International Raceway (B.I.R.) after the veteran nitromethane pilot blistere! d the B.I.R. quarter mile with a run of 4.751 seconds at 326.24 mph to qualify second.
Johnson, who entered the day in the No. 3 qualifying position, took advantage of the great weather conditions when he blasted his Mike Green/Johnny West-tuned Chevy flopper to the 4.751, 326.24 effort to open Saturday qualifying at B.I.R. It was the second quickest run of Johnson's professional driving career that dates back to 1989. He clocked a 4.741 in a final-round win at the season-opening Winternationals.
Sitting comfortably in the 16-car field, Johnson's Monte Carlo spun the tires in its final effort and slowed to a run of 6.742 at 130.28. The No. 2 qualifying spot is Johnson's best qualifying finish of the 2005 season.
"What a difference two weeks makes," Johnson said. "It's really great how the car is running this weekend. We've got a really good shot a winning some rounds and gaining some points. This is probably as confident as I've been all season long. It would be great to capitalize and make four good runs on Sunday."
Johnson will battle No. 15 qualifier Bob Bode in the first round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday. Johnson has a 2-1 career record versus Bode.
