Moves up in POWERAde Points Standings to 9th Position

BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 13, 2007) -- After racing his Skoal Racing Impala Funny Car to a tight semifinal finish in Sonoma, Tommy Johnson Jr. posted a second-round finish Sunday in Brainerd at the 2007 Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.

The defending Funny Car champion in Brainerd qualified in the No. 9 position with a 4.863-second elapsed time at 313 mph--the second quickest of Saturday's afternoon session and Skoal Racing's fastest run of the qualifiers. Johnson defeated veteran Jerry Tolliver in the first round with a pass of 4.858 seconds at 317.64 mph. Johnson was pitted against Gary Scelzi in the next round, where he slowed to a pass of 4.899 seconds at 310.55 mph, while Scelzi sped to a run of 4.819 at 311.77 mph to score the narrow victory.

Johnson and Skoal Racing improved their standing in the Countdown to the Championship, where he now sits in the No. 9 position, 83 points behind Jim Head.

"We're getting some good results at this point in the season; too bad we didn't perform as well in the beginning of the year," said Johnson. "We have a tough challenge ahead of us to get into the Top-8, and we need the stars to align for us in Reading. It's definitely better to head there with a mathematical chance than to be out of it altogether."

The Skoal Racing team will next compete at the 23rd annual Toyo Tires Nationals, Aug. 16-19, at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Penn.
