Hammonds sits 14th at Brainerd qualifying midpoint.

Rain was the big story during Friday's first day of qualifying at the Rugged Liner Nationals. Persistent showers delayed activities at Brainerd International Raceway, with only the Pro Stock Cars and Pro Stock Motorcycles able to make two attempts.

After battling a loose race car on his first attempt, Hammonds came back in the evening session to post a 7.008-second elapsed time with a top speed of 196.10 mph, good enough to place the Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier 14th with two sessions remaining on Saturday. However, with additional inclement weather in the forecast for tomorrow, Hammonds knew tonight's run could take on added significance.

"Obviously tonight's pass was a step in the right direction. It was probably the first good, clean and straight run we've had in several races, but we're not satisfied. It was definitely not a perfect run, so we know there's room for improvement tomorrow. We'll download the data from the car, analyze it and get a little more aggressive for tomorrow morning's session, trying to get our Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier in the top half of the field and ready to race on Sunday.

"I know they've been talking about some bad weather in the area for tonight and tomorrow, so it's good that we're in the show. Of course, you'd like to be in the show after every session."
