0-FER-SATURDAY LEAVES WILK 9th

Tim Wilkerson did see the silver lining after smoking the tires twice on Saturday, but he also couldn't help but focus on the shortcomings of a day in the Minnesota sunshine when the Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby failed to negotiate the full 1,000 feet. He ended up 9th on the ladder and will face Jeff Arend in round one.

"The good news is, it went further the second time than it did on the first lap today, so that's an improvement," Wilkerson said. "But, as much as we were trying some things, and testing some new approaches, no one likes to fail and go oh-for-two. I obviously didn't expect it to smoke the tires, because you'd never tune the car to do that, but we wanted to see what would happen if we tried some things. What happened was tire smoke. Hopefully we learned what not to do.

"Then there's falling out of the top half of the field on the last run, so now we're ninth and don't have lane choice. On top of that, we're matched up with a team that has about the most on the line this weekend. Jeff and his team have been in 11th place and have been knocking on the door to get into the Countdown for weeks now. We like those guys, and they're a great team, but we're out for blood as much as they are. They're trying to get in, and we're trying to move up."
