Howard makes fourth straight final round.

BRAINERD, Minn. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard made her fourth straight final round appearance during this past weekend's Rugged Liner Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. The runner-up was Howard's second straight at a national event.

Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., qualified her Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster twelfth in the field after rain canceled one qualifying session with a 5.590 second elapsed time. In round one, Howard defeated David Wells with a 5.479 at 259.21 mph, and then took out Todd Datweiler with a 5.437 at 258.91 mph, which was the quickest pass of the weekend out of a Blown Alcohol Dragster. In the semifinal, her opponent Gary Ormsby, Jr., who had just ran a 5.29 in the round before at over 269 mph, redlighted away his chance of victory, handing Howard an automatic win in which she ran a 5.512 at 257.28 mph.

In the final, Howard would face Arthur Gallant's A/Fuel Dragster. Howard took a slight holeshot off the line, but could not hold off Gallant's 5.317 at 252.52 mph with her own 5.563 at 255.54 mph.

"Overall, it was a pretty good weekend for the team," said Howard. "Where we are now really feels good after the start to the season we had. The team gave me a great car to race all weekend, and I can't say enough about our tuner Tom Conway. Tom and the team have really turned this car around. Anytime you know you have a good car, it really helps your driving. We gave it all we had all weekend. When you are going up against A/Fuel cars that are running low .30's in conditions like we saw this weekend, there really isn't a whole lot you can do with a blown car except try to run your own race, and hope they fall off."

The next event for the Howard Racing Team will be the biggest in all of drag racing, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park, Labor Day Weekend.

"We'll go there and do our best as usual," stated Howard. "There will be a lot of good running cars there, so it will be tough."
