BRAINERD, Minn. - Despite starting the year out slow, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard has been on fire of late, on the heels of three straight final rounds, including a win at her last event in Joliet, Ill. Howard and her team hope to keep that momentum going during this weekend's Rugged Liner Nationals at The Colonel's Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., hopes to maintain the level of consistency in her Tom Conway tuned dragster that has been the key to her recent success. It also was the key ingredient to her fifth place national finish and Division 4 Championship last year.
"We are always trying to go faster," said Howard. "But being consistent is always our main objective. We don't go out there and try to kill the world and get low e.t. of every round. Tom and the crew have worked their tails off this year getting the car to the level it is now. It's a really good feeling as a driver to know that your team is going to give you a good car to race every round, so you just have to do your job."
Howard, who currently sits eighth in national standings, hopes to make a late season charge with the remaining events she has left to claim.
"The first part of the year really hurt us as far as points go," commented Howard. "I try not to get too caught up in all of the points implications during a race. It just distracts you. If we do well, the points will take care of themselves. It will, however, be more difficult this year to make up ground because we have less races to claim."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions. Qualifying will resume Saturday morning followed by first round of eliminations that afternoon. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
