MEYER, BATEMAN TAKE NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT BIR'S LUCAS OIL SERIES EVENT

BRAINERD, Minn. -- Final rounds of qualifying are complete at Brainerd Int'l Raceway's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Randy Meyer set the pace in Top Alcohol Dragster, jumping from the No. 5 spot after Friday's qualifying session, and Roger Bateman is No. 1 in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Bateman moved from the sixth spot to the top.

Meyer, the division's defending Top Alcohol Dragster champion from Spring Hill, Mo., covered the quarter-mile in 5.283 seconds at 250.83 mph. That effort gave him a tenth of a second on No. 2 qualifier Jim Whitely of Grand Junction, Colo. Whitely ran 5.382 seconds at 266.06 mph. Friday's top qualifier, William Zivkovich, Litchfield, Minn., failed to improve on his initial qualifying pass of 5.524 seconds at 259.11 mph and was relegated to the No. 5 place.

Calgary, Alb., resident Bateman made a 5.577-second, 257.19 mph lap to take the top spot. The second-place qualifier, Hank Coolidge, Sunburst, Mont., ran 5.655 seconds at 253.28 mph. What is also notable about this eight-car Top Alcohol Funny Car field is who is not in it. Cy Chesterman, the defending event champ and division titlist out of Sioux City, Iowa, qualified in the No. 12 spot with a 5.887-second run at 248.11 mph.

Michael Johnson, Springdale, Ark., remained the No. 1 qualifier in Comp Eliminator as did Kearney, Neb., Super Stock racer David Bogner. Clif Bakx, Kleefield, Manit., also stayed in the top qualifying spot in Top Dragster. Stock Eliminator racer Peter Boslovitch, Lockport, Manit., moved into the No. 1 position, Dave Slatten, Fort Collins, Color., leads the field in Top Sportsman and Toby Giese, Kandiyohi, Minn., is No. 1 in Sportsman Motorcycle.

Racing continues Sunday at BIR. Gates open at 7 a.m. and eliminations start at 9 a.m. Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event are $25. Children 6 to 12 years old are half-price and kids 5 and under are admitted free.
