BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 18, 2000) - Dean Skuza and the Matco Tools/Mopar Parts Nitro Funny Car blitzed the Brainerd International Raceway quarter mile with a 4.945-second lap at 312.50 mph run to take the fourth position during Friday's Colonel's Truck Accessories NHRA Nationals qualifying.
"I can relax now," Skuza said. "I tell you what; we were a little conservative on that run in hopes of making the show. We are going to try some things tomorrow and see what happens. We'll work on our race day setup, with a shot at number one in mind."
Darrell Alderman, driver of the Team Mopar Dodge Avenger, led the Dodge Motorsports and Team Mopar Pro Stock contingent in the 13th-qualifying position. Alderman drove to a 7.004/196.64 second-session lap.
"We moved a little to the left off the line and that hurt me," said Alderman, who made his second and quickest run in the left lane. "We should be okay for tomorrow, but I don't know where we'll end up.
"The left lane wasn't too good," Alderman added. "We'll make the best of it tomorrow."
Dodge Motorsports driver Larry Morgan was bumped out of the field by final-qualifier Richie Stevens after posting a 7.014/196.56 combination. Morgan was disappointed with the result.
"I thought I made a perfect run," noted Morgan, after his left-lane pass in the second session. "We need to do a little tuning and get us back in form. We'll be okay. It's just frustrating to be out of the show after the first day."
Alderman's teammate Scott Geoffrion, driver of the other Team Mopar Dodge Avenger, struggled through the first two sessions as the Nickens Brothers Racing crew ironed out a new car and Hemi engine. Geoffrion failed to make a full quarter-mile run.
"We're still chasing it," Geoffrion said. "I let off because we blew through the clutch.
"We are still working out the bugs on this new car," Geoffrion continued. "That was only the second run on this chassis and engine."
