Tire shake culprit as Nance misses cut at Brainerd.

BRAINERD, Minn. - - Neither Friday's nor Saturday's weather was Brainerd Chamber of Commerce picture perfect.

A lengthy rain delay on Friday caused the cancellation of one of two scheduled Top Fuel and Funny Car sessions at the 21st annual NHRA Rugged Liner Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. In spite of the changing weather, both Pro Stock car and Pro Stock motorcycle were able to complete all their opening day qualifying sessions.

Saturday started out dismal -- cool temperatures made cooler by the 30-plus mph winds and rain laden clouds -- but improved as the afternoon progressed.

In his first qualifying pass on Friday, tire shake prevented Larry Nance, from Akron, Ohio, from making a full run. On the second opportunity, things got worse. During a burnout attempt, Nance lost fifth gear causing the driver of the Team Marines Chevy Cavalier to abort the burnout. Without heat in the tires, the run too had to be aborted as Nance just coasted down the BIR quarter-mile.

Tire shake also prevented Nance from improving on Saturday. When Pro Stock qualifying ended, Nance was on the outside of the 16-car field in the 33rd qualifying position and would not be a part of tomorrow's eliminations.

"We could not get the tire shake problem corrected this weekend and it prevented us from have a legitimate chance at making the field," said Nance after the four qualifying sessions were complete. "We have been consistent the last five races and I feel we will return to that form at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis in two weeks.

"Meanwhile, we will test before the Indy race to insure that we have the tire problem corrected. I expect the Team Marines Cavalier to rebound in Indy."

The next event for Nance, the former Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavalier NBA all-star turned drag racer, and his Team Marines Cavalier will be the 48th annual NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Clermont, Ind., just west of downtown Indianapolis. This prestigious event will unfold August 28- Sept. 2.
