BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 13, 2004) - Two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 7 qualifying spot Friday at Brainerd International Raceway.

Dixon, a two-time winner at B.I.R., drove his Miller-backed rail to two of the most consistent passes of the day on Friday. The 34-time NHRA winner used a Dick LaHaie tune-up to record an opening pass of 4.658 seconds at 315.64 mph, and followed that up by racing to a run of 4.659 at 315.71 to position the Miller Lite car in the No. 7 spot with two qualifying attempts remaining. Dixon qualified No. 1 at the Brainerd race last August.

"You can't compare last year to this year," Dixon said. "You're in different weather conditions, it's much cooler this year, and we're racing with different tires, different wings and different motors; everything is different from last year. You can't use the setup from a year ago. The guys changed some things with the power level of the engine and it responded very well on the first run. We'll come back tomorrow and look to improve."

Dixon hopes to advance in the Top Fuel order when nitro qualifying resumes with sessions at noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Minnesota facility.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Lucas Oil Nationals at 8 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Aug. 14 and show three hours of final eliminations coverage at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Aug. 15.
