Good qualifying runs in heat send Humphrey into sixth place at Brainerd

BRAINERD, Minn., August 9, 2008 -- Justin Humphreys had a remarkable performance turn-around Saturday that gave the RaceRedi Motorsports Dodge team a needed boost of confidence.

Unhappy to be 14th after the first day of Lucas Oil Nationals Pro Stock qualifying at Brainerd International Raceway, Humphreys hoped the necessary changes were made to get the car down the track with competitive elapsed times Saturday, and they were.

He registered a run of 6.706 seconds at 205.63 mph that boosted him to seventh place and then produced not just his quickest run of the weekend, but the best of the last session. The 6.703 at 205.29 mph lap moved him up a notch to sixth place and brought a smile to his face.

"The performance definitely stepped up for us," said Humphreys. "Roy Johnson (team engine builder along with his son and driver Allen) makes awesome power and that helped us. Their crew chief, Mark Ingersoll, has been working with us and Adam and Adam from Penske's shock absorber shop have been helping us with issues we've had with our shocks in the last couple of races. We owe them a big thanks.

"To go out and run low e.t. of the fourth session in the heat is a pretty stout pass. Now we'll just get ready for eliminations."

Humphreys meets Jeg Coughlin in the opening round. It will be the fifth time they've met this season. Coughlin holds a 3-1 in 2008 and is 5-1 overall.
