BRAINERD, Minn. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster rookie John Haley will be looking to make a splash at his home track during this weekend's Rugged Liner Nationals at The Colonel's Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn. Haley, who has competed in only five events in his career, has been to the finals of the last three, including a win last weekend in Atlanta. Haley and his team lead by former Funny Car Champ Frank Hawley hope to duplicate that success this weekend.
Haley, from Wayzata, Minn., is a graduate of the Frank Hawley Drag Racing School, and feels having a good teacher such as Frank is a key to his sudden success this year.
"When I decided to go alcohol racing, I wanted to surround myself with the best people," said Haley. "Having Frank with me at every event on top of the instruction I have received from him at his school has been an invaluable asset. When we had the opportunity to buy a top notch car like Jay Meyer's turnkey, I jumped on it, and it has been a fun ride ever since."
With the race team based out of Hawley's shop in Gainesville, Fla., all of Haley's events have been in the southeastern corner of the country. Haley is excited to finally get to race in front of his home state friends and family, especially given his recent successes.
"We race a lot down south because we keep the car in Frank's shop," stated Haley. "I'm pretty pumped about this weekend because I finally get to race in my backyard. We're going to have a lot of friends up there with us. I just hope we can continue the roll we've been on for the past few races."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions. Qualifying will resume Saturday morning followed by first round of eliminations that afternoon. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
