DENSHAM PRODUCES BEST QUALIFYING EFFORT OF THE SEASON
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 12, 2005) -- Gary Densham put his best performance of qualifying so far this season out on the track Friday at the 24th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.
Densham drove the Racebricks Chevy Monte Carlo to a 4.855-second pass at 316.82 mph during the second session of the day. The performance was good enough for the No. 9 spot. If he can keep the position after two more rounds of qualifying Saturday, it will be his highest qualifying place this season.
"We're real happy with this run because we have been struggling and it's great to have some positive numbers to look at," Densham said. "The team has been working so hard to make the improvements and it's working. Our communication is better and it shows."
Densham's highest qualifying position this year has been the 12th spot earned in St. Louis. Densham earned a semifinal appearance that weekend.
"We're doing everything we can to make this one bad hot rod," Densham said. "Hopefully before the season is out we'll get there. It's starting to turn around and that's a lot more fun.
"We have great people behind this Racebricks car. Marty (Yacoobian, CEO of Racebricks) and the Torco Fuels people are just great and I'm hoping we can make them proud on Sunday. We still have two sessions to go on Saturday and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do."
Qualifying starts at noon for Top Fuel, continuing at 3 p.m. before final eliminations start at 11 a.m. Sunday.
ESPN2 will air all the racing this weekend. Qualifying can be seen at 6 p.m. (ET) on Saturday while the eliminations can be seen at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. NHRA 2Day will start at 11:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.
