Wells hoping to play off past success in Brainerd
BRAINERD, Minn. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver David Wells will be looking for his fourth win at Brainerd International Raceway during this weekend's Lucas Oil Nationals held there. The former three-time Division 5 Champ won the 2000 national event here along with divisional event wins in 1999 and 2000. He also reached the final of this year's divisional event.
Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, comes into the event hot off a runner-up finish in Scribner, Neb. Wells and his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team lead by five-time World Champion Crew Chief Norm Grimes hope to go one round further this weekend.
"We done fairly well on the divisional level," said Wells. "Not as well as we would have liked, but we have made it to several finals. We really need to pick up a win here to help our national championship hopes. Norm and the guys have done a great job all year, and we've been getting some help from Valvoline and Crane Cams, so hopefully we can hand out some Blue Bunny Ice Cream in the winner's circle"
At the divisional event in June, the track had a brand new racing surface. Wells thinks the surface will be up to par by this weekend.
"When we ran the divisional up there, it was pretty green," stated Wells. "But it was starting to come around by the end of the weekend. I think once you get at least one session of alcohol cars and fuel cars down it, it will be all right."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two qualifying sessions. Qualifying will conclude Saturday morning with one final session followed by first round of eliminations that afternoon. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
