Baca ends day early - Looks to Indy
BRAINERD, Minn. (August 17, 2003) -- Fresh from a runner-up spot at the last race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., David Baca, driver of the Henkelman & Baca/American Racing Top Fuel dragster, hopes that the momentum from that race carries over to today's eliminations at the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals.
Baca, who qualified No. 5, faced Scott Palmer, the No. 12 qualifier, in the opening round as he began his quest for his second consecutive final round and first win of his rookie year.
Both Baca and Palmer were glued together all the way down the Brainerd International Raceway quarter-mile. At the finish line it was Palmer crossing first, with Baca .0179 seconds behind.
"We lost a hole (cylinder) at the get go and that cost us as much as a tenth," said Baca, "but regardless of what happen it's still a loss in our column. We'll look at everything and get ready for Indy. We need to regain the momentum. We are going all out to be on top of our game when we get to the biggest race of the year, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. We have a lot of things happening there and it's going to be exciting. Stay tuned."
Baca gained a few points and remains in sixth place in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings. He leaves here and enters Indy with 765 points.
With seven races remaining on this year's NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series schedule, next up for the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports team, David Baca and the American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/Skill Clean Top Fuel dragster is the "granddaddy" of national events, the prestigious Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Sportsman racing begins on Wednesday, August 27, with the first session of professional qualifying scheduled for Friday evening, August 29. Qualifying concludes on Sunday, August 31, with final eliminations on Monday, Labor Day.
