McClenathan happy at No. 2 at BIR

BRAINERD, Minn. (August 13, 2005) -- Drivers of the 8000-plus horsepower Top Fuel dragsters have been blazing down the BIR -- Brainerd International Raceway -- quarter-mile during qualifying for the 24th NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals. Cory McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog dragster, was no exception.

Running his best elapsed time since Houston earlier this year, McClenathan finished qualifying in the No. 2 position. The Lake Havasu City, Ariz., driver covered the BIR quarter-mile in 4.501 seconds at 328.62, the best of his four qualifying runs.

"We're actually very happy with our number two position," said McClenathan. "This FRAM AirHog top fueler is running very consistent numbers and I'm really happy with what Todd Smith (crew chief) and Bob Bauer (clutch specialist) are doing, especially this weekend."

"It's great going to the line knowing we have a good race car. To be able to qualify second and earn some additional Budweiser bonus points is awesome. Tomorrow we'll be careful and go some rounds. Tony Schumacher is going to be tough to beat, but if we both get to the final round, I look forward to the opportunity and challenge."

Schumacher qualified No. 1 and made a statement in doing so. The driver of the Army dragster ran a track record 4.446 second elapsed time (the 4th quickest E.T. in NHRA history) at a track record speed of 337.58 mph (the fastest speed in NHRA history).

McClenathan, currently No. 9 in the POWERade point standings, will face Mitch King in tomorrow's opening round. King qualified No. 15 with and elapsed time of 4.936 seconds.

ELIMINATIONS: McClenathan begins his quest for the Top Fuel title tomorrow with eliminations for all classes getting underway at 11 a.m. Time is local Brainerd time -- Central Time (CT): 1 hour behind the Eastern Time zone -- and subject to change at anytime.
