Two years ago, Century 21 Firebird pilot Tom Martino collected the third national event win of his NHRA Pro Stock career at Brainerd International Raceway. Unfortunately, Martino did not have the chance to duplicate that thrilling performance during Sunday's running of The Colonel's Truck Accessories Nationals. Throughout qualifying, the Martino crew battled to find the proper combination to balance the horsepower-friendly weather conditions and tricky racing surface. In the end, however, their best effort of 7.010 seconds fell six thousandths of a second shy of making the top sixteen, snapping a string of twenty-one races in which Martino had qualified for final eliminations, dating back to last year's race in Reading, Pennsylvania. "After a couple of strong runs at a Pontiac event in Ohio last weekend, we came into Brainerd fairly confident that we'd finally gotten a handle on our Century 21 Firebird. Unfortunately, this weekend showed us that we still have some work to do. Although we were among the fastest cars in the back half, we were really hurt by our starting line performance, which is unusual for us. Although in earlier races we had been able to rely on our power to pull us through, the favorable weather conditions this weekend brought the field closer together, and it cost us.

"It's particularly disappointing when two other cars running our motors made the show. That tells us the problem is with our tune-up. We have two weeks before the next race in Indianapolis, and I know we're going to be spending a lot of time going over this car. We know it will fly on the good tracks - we have to find a way to make it competitive on the trickier surfaces as well."
