FORCE EXTENDS WINSTON POINTS LEAD WITH NINTH WIN AT BRAINERD

BRAINERD, Minnesota - John Force drove his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang to its eighth victory of the 2000 season Sunday, winning the Colonel's Truck Accessories Nationals for the ninth time in 13 years and opening up a 160-point advantage over Jerry Toliver in the race for the Winston Championship.

In winning for the third time in succession and for the eighth time this season, Force needed all of his skills as a driver.

The sport's most prolific winner needed a .489 second reaction time and all his experience to beat No. 2 qualifier Del Worsham in the semifinals. Force's starting line advantage made his Castrol Funny Car a winner even though Worsham owned a slight performance advantage, 4.939 to 4.953 seconds.

The victory, the 89th of Force's incredible career, was secured with a final round conquest of Jim Epler, whose Camaro lost traction in the final round while Force was posting his best numbers of the race at 4.935, 309.34 mph.

WINNERS: Top Fuel, Tony Schumacher beat Doug Kalitta; Funny Car, John Force defeated Jim Epler; Pro Stock, Kurt Johnson defeated Jeg Coughlin Jr.; Pro Stock Motorcycle, Antron Brown def. Tony Mullen. NEXT EVENT: 46th annual U.S. Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park, Clermont, Indiana.

JOHN FORCE, Castrol GTX Ford Mustang
Qualifying position: 3rd at 4.919 seconds, 308.57 miles per hour.
Race Results: Beat Tommy Johnson Jr., Bob Gilbertson, Del Worsham and Jim Epler.

Notable: The victory, coupled with Jerry Toliver's first round loss, enabled Force to extend his lead to 180 points in the race for the 2000 Winston Championship. Quotable: "(Crew Chief Austin) Coil said I needed to give them a little help in the semifinals. So I coffeed up, ate me a cupcake and went after (Del Worsham). The crew works so hard. You need to know that you can do your job, too. We just need to stay focused and go on to Indy and do our thing." - John Force.

TONY PEDREGON, Castrol SYNTEC Ford Mustang
Qualifying position: 12th at 5.050 seconds, 252.95 mph.
Race Results: Lost to Dean Skuza on a foul start.

Notable: By outqualifying Jerry Toliver by three positions, Tony Pedregon moved up from fifth to fourth in qualifying points for the Big Bud Shootout bonus race while Toliver fell from fourth to fifth. That subtle change of position gives Pedregon the choice of lanes over Toliver when the two meet in the first round of the Big Bud Shootout on Sunday of the U.S. Nationals. Quotable: "I knew that Skuza had a (performance) advantage and I just pushed it a little too hard. It was my fault, but I'm not down. We're going to test this week and get ready for Indy and put this weekend behind us." - Tony Pedregon.
