ANTRON BROWN RACES TO NO. 8 QUALIFYING SPOT AT BRAINERD
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 14, 2010) - Antron Brown, a four-time winner at Brainerd International Raceway, drove his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to the No. 8 qualifying position Saturday at B.I.R.
Brown, who entered the final day of qualifying for the 29th annual Brainerd race in the provisional No. 9 qualifying position after clocking an elapsed time of 5.106-seconds on Friday, improved his position on Saturday's opening pass. The 24-time NHRA winner used a tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to power the Matco Tools/U.S. Army car to a lap of 3.923 seconds at 302.62 mph. That placed Brown eighth in the order. On his final qualifying effort, the former college track star's bright blue Matco-backed car lost traction and slowed to pass of 4.585 at 167.66 after losing the blower belt on the run. It is the 15th time in 17 races this season that Brown will start from the top half of the 16-car field. He also qualified eighth at the Joliet race in June. His average qualifying position this season is 4.7 with five No. 1 qualifiers. Doug Kalitta earned the Top Fuel pole on Saturday at Brainerd at 3.842-seconds.
"We struggled during qualifying this weekend here at Brainerd, but we've been trying some things on our Matco Tools car too," Brown said. "We'll go back to what we know for race day and I'm confident we can go some rounds. Morgan (Lucas) will be tough. We'll have to throw down a good lap to get by those Geico boys, but this DSR Matco team is up to it."
