BRAD JETER, JETER RACING CHEVY S-10 PICKUP, eliminated RANDY DANIELS, DANIELS MOTORSPORTS CHEVY S-10, in the final round today, tightening up the championship chase among the top three in points: Bob Panella Jr., who lost to Jeter in the semifinals; Mark Osborne, who lost in the first round; and Jeter.
Daniels launched first at the Christmas Tree with a .419 reaction time, while Jeter followed with a .436. Daniels slowed, however, to an 8.786-second pass at 114.53, while Jeter scooted to the finish in 7.605 seconds at 176.67 mph.
JETER: "Our Chevy S-10 did a great job all weekend. I got a wake up call on Friday night from my crew chief Gerald Guadaganolo, who sat me down to tell me my head is not in the program. I've got to thank him. He said you're going to have to get back in the ballgame. He put the confidence back in me. I knew I had to take the Chevy S-10 and put it in the final if I wanted a chance to win the championship. We had to run Panella in the semis, he was awfuly tough. It was won on the starting line. My crew saves me at times and I save my crew at times." WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP? "The bigget thing I need is a confidence builder. I've been down on myself as a driver. I need to take the confidence and go to the last two races and give it our best shot. It's going to be awfully tough to win this thing. The chances of these two guys (Panella and Osborne) slipping are slim to none. We still have a mathematical chance of winning and we will give it our best and take this S-10 and win a championship with it. We're trying to win a championship and get a sponsor, all at the same time. If we aren't able to find a sposor next year, it's hard to say if we are going to be able to race next year."
DANIELS: "We broke a spark plug, the No. 2 spark plug. I knew it was broken in the water box, I knew it didn't sound right. I felt I had a problem, but I tried it anyway. It's a real heartbreaker after running so good all weekend long. It was our race. If we could have just made a repeat of the round before (7.591/175.68 to beat Brian Self's 7.639/175.91), there is no way he could have beaten us, but that's racing. We know we got us a good fast combination now, we'll go back and freshen it up and get ready for the next one."
