BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - NHRA Federal Mogul Funny Car racer Marc White came just one round short of winning his third straight Division 3 race at this weekend's NHRA Division 3 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, Ky. White qualified No. 1, and worked his way to the finals to be defeated by his Division 3 rival, Chuck Cheeseman.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., took the No. 1 qualifying spot from Cheeseman during Saturday afternoon's final qualifying session with a 5.867 second run at 247.29 mph. In the first round, he took out Bobby Martin, who broke in the burnout, with a 5.883 at 243.28 mph, then had a competition bye in the semifinals, and ran a 5.913 at 244.60 mph. Cheeseman ran a 5.910 during that round, giving him lane choice for the final
In a close, side-by-side drag race, despite letting White get the jump off the line, Cheeseman edged him out with a 5.858 at 247.29 mph to White's right-there 5.915 at 244.60 mph. With the win, Cheeseman also regained the Division 3 points lead from White.
"Bowling Green is a touchy race track," said White. "We qualified well, and put ourselves in an excellent spot with the bye run in the semi's. Our first round opponent broke in the burnout, so we basically had two singles into the final. We pretty much kept pace with 'Chucky,' which is what we wanted to do."
"Unfortunately, I think what bit us, is in the semifinals we lost lane choice by .003 of a second. I think that was our undoing in the final. It smoked the tires a little bit in second gear, and that was pretty much it."
With Cheeseman regaining the points lead with one race remaining on the Division 3 schedule, the stage is set for a showdown at the last race at Indianapolis Raceway Park, Oct. 12-14. With a win, White and the Etterman Racing team can possibly sew up the Division 3 Championship.
"This past weekend doesn't really change anything," stated White. "It looks like we'll be geared up for a showdown at the Indy points race. If we can win it, I think we'll be in pretty good shape for the Division Championship. If we can't win it, then Chuck will win it. It will come down to a winner take all basically. After that, we're just going to go to the remaining national events we have, and run the car as hard as we know how."
