Lucas Oil Racing
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 2) – Drag racing has a funny way of giving teams the chance to make up for past misfortune. Just ask Brandon Bernstein and the MAVTV/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster team.
Bernstein qualified No. 6 for Sunday's Top Fuel eliminations at the Toyota NHRA SuperNationals, and he's racing Dave Grubnic, who the team lost to in the semifinals in Topeka after the MAVTV car broke at the line.
"I'll let you know if karma is smiling on us tomorrow after we race," Bernstein said. "It's a good car over there and it was a shame we didn't actually get to race him in Topeka. It's going to be nice to go back up there and have a shot at beating him."
Bernstein had a best lap of 3.764 seconds at 323.27 mph during Friday night's blistering fast final session. Grubnic qualified 11th with a 3.820 at 318.84 mph.
The MAVTV car made a couple of runs during qualifying that had to be cut off early. However, Bernstein said there's no uneasiness in the MAVTV pit, because the team believes it had the track's sweet spot figured out.
"It's not been real easy with the sun going in and out of the clouds today," he said. "Just getting a handle on it has been tricky. We'll make the adjustments we need to and we'll be ready to go tomorrow.
"It might not seem like it from the outside, but it's been a great weekend for the MAVTV car. We really feel that Joe Barlam, our crew chief, knows what to do and we'll keep our streak of going to at least the semifinals alive."
Bernstein said with every run the car has made this weekend, things have only gotten better.
"The more runs we make in different conditions just gives us more information to work from," Bernstein said. "We saw a lot of different conditions this weekend, and Joe will make the adjustments and make the car do what he wants it to do."
