SCHUMACHER MOVES UP TO THIRD

BAYTOWN, Tex., March 28 - U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher claimed the third starting spot here Saturday following final qualifying for tomorrow's O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.

Coming in as the 15th-place qualifier after one round of qualifying on Friday, the Chicago-area resident initially advanced to 12th before laying down a 3.868-second run at 313.00 mph in session number four which was good enough for a top three spot in the order behind Antron Brown and Brandon Bernstein, respectively.

"That was a terrific pass," said Schumacher. "We really needed to go into Sunday feeling good about ourselves. Not only did we gain a bunch of positions, but we were the quickest of the round. That was nice to see."

For the third time in four races, the six-time world champion will tangle with 14th- place qualifier, Del Cox, Jr., in the first round of eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. CDT.

"Just like in the previous meetings, we can't take Del for granted," added Schumacher. "He put up a pretty good number himself in that last session so he'll be a tough customer. We'll be ready for him."

Schumacher, who holds fifth-place in the standings, is looking for his first victory of the season at HRP. To date, he's advanced to one semifinal round and a pair of quarterfinal rounds.

"We're determined to get that trophy come tomorrow afternoon," he said. "It's time for us to make a statement."
